Friends and Patrons,

As promised, we are continuing our Anglo-American book series with this fourth installment on the political genius of John. C. Calhoun. He was a Congressman, Senator, Vice-President, Secretary of War, and Secretary of State.

His presence is still with us, not only through his accurate prophecies concerning what would eventually happen to America as the commercial interest dominated the agrarian interest, but also in his bureau system, West Point’s officer training model, conservative philosophy, and statesmanlike example.

Calhoun represents the last of the Founding Fathers according to some, because of his belief and commitment to the Union. For Calhoun, the Union was a compact. It was also a mechanism to preserve a pre-existing arrangement known as society. Society is something each of us is born into because God made us social creatures.

Like Burke, Calhoun saw society as a delicate balance of liberty and security, whereby only a virtuous people and government could maintain health. He has much to say on the matters afflicting America today, including related to foreign policy, the growth of government, and minority rights in a mutually benefiting relationship known as the Constitution.
